Ancient mother church of the city before 1693, stands at the extreme eastern side of the built-up area, near the present-day Giardino Ibleo, where we can still find the large fifteenth-century portal, of Gothic-Catalan style, only remaining ruin of the ancient temple.
The church was badly damaged in the earthquake and the only parts still standing were part of the façade, some of the minor chapels and part of the major chapel, thus a vast venue adjacent to the left aisle of the old temple was built, place where the services could take place. In the second quarter of the XVIII century, it was decided to transfer the church to the old site of the church of S. Nicola, which up to the XVI century had been the parish for the congregation of the Greek rite and subsequently passed to the Latin rite, thus becoming “the sacramental church” of S. Giorgio. In 1738, Rosario Gagliardi, architect from Noto, one of the protagonists of the baroque reconstruction, was put in charge of the project which, with this building became one of his best known works. The first stone was laid on the 28th of June in 1739, as recalls the plaque set in the right side of the staircase, nevertheless, as recalls the enigmatic inscription situated on the opposite side, the works were able to begin only in 1744.
